"Cihara"
-----Hello !
-----Well, it's
just a little over a month now since my dad passed and though the air is
still very sad we are starting to move on as best as we can
.. this
is what he wanted and he will always be with us in spirit and in our hearts.
And once again I want to thank everyone who called or sent us e-mails,
letters and cards and for all your thoughts and prayers. Thank You!
-----I have to
tell you about my latest "adventure" this month - teaching Cihara
- one of our foundation females who is now spayed and retired here - to
herd deer. There is a huge deer herd around here with about 20 deer including
3 bucks - 1 4 point - 1 2 point and one yearling. I love the deer - especially
the bucks - but at the same time a herd of 20 deer eating with the horses
can eat a LOT of hay and at the expensive price of hay due to the drought
we can't afford to be feeding 20 deer plus 14 horses! So I have trained
Cihara to chase only the deer away from the feed but not the horses. She
is the best herding dog you could imagine - she learned so quickly to keep
them away that now all I have to do is open the door and say go get em
and she will run all the way down to the arena - chase the deer to the
"boundary" line and come back to me! She just takes them to a
certain line and then stops chasing them. The deer are actually learning
the boundaries. They also know the ARE allowed to come down late afternoon
and finish up any hay the horses left but ARE NOT allowed down in the morning
after we just fed. Cihara loves her new job - she can bound through 2 feet
of snow like it wasn't even there and comes back looking like she is smiling
for a job well done. It is hard to believe she is going on 8 years old
- but she is as active an a 2 year old. No one that sees her can believe
she is going on 8.
-----Unfortunately,
I haven't been able to do much dog sledding this winter because there isn't
any real snow - I just heard the Race to the Sky Dog Sled race which is
in Montana and starts pretty close to Helena has been canceled this year
for the first time ever because there isn't enough snow. We had a big whopping
2 feet of snow a month ago and then warmed up into the 50's and 60's so
we have nothing but ice and mud - typical March/April weather but it's
ONLY the beginning of February. Though I am not going to complain too much
- I can put aside the dog sledding and enjoy the warm weather :)
-----We have
several litters of pups due this month so I am expecting some all nighters
- but we are really looking forward to our expected babies on the way!
-----Well, till
next time!
